The Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) maintain sanitation and monitor the supply of water, construction of roads, upkeep of play grounds, bus stands for commuters, maintenance of parks and other infrastructural development. The various departments look after these requirements and work in unison for the benefit of people.

A Municipal Corporation provides essential services to the people for comfortable living. Today, e-governance has made things faster and simpler as important applications can be downloaded from concerned websites online from the comfort of our homes!
Ranchi Municipal Corporation has stood by its resolve to bestow good living conditions to the inhabitants of Ranchi. Right to Life has been envisaged in Article 21 of the Constitution of India and RMC has upheld these for the benefit of people.
RMC was established on 25th September,1979 when Ranchi and Doranda Municipalities and Ranchi Doranda Joint Water Board were merged.
The selection of RMC under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission Scheme (JNNURM) is a feather in the cap. This has been possible due to earnest efforts and initiatives RMC has taken for the development of Ranchi city. Trade licenses, waste management and drains cleaning, registration of births and deaths, town planning and so on come within the purview of functions assigned to RMC.
The first elections of RMC were held in the year 1986. It also holds the coveted recognition of being the first Corporation of Jharkhand State. Elections to Urban Local Bodies are held every five years.
The Election Commission of Jharkhand issued notification for holding elections against 610 positions of 28 urban local bodies in Jharkhand on April 7, 2013. The voters decided results for 582 ward Councillors and 28 Mayors or Presidents of District Council. For the first time in the history of RMC, 50% of 55 wards were reserved for women. Elections were not conducted in eight Urban Local Bodies where elections were held in the year 2010. The elections in these eight Urban Local Bodies will be conducted in 2015.
Clean Jharkhand Project was a Solid Waste Management Project (SWM) in collaboration with Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra (NBJK) and non-government organization. It is responsible for providing household connections for piped water supply and for collecting water tax as part of ''holding tax''. RMC has also installed tube-wells and stand-posts in certain areas.
The mobile tax collection system of RMC, which was launched on February 1, 2013, has become very popular. People who had not paid holding tax can themselves call up this civic body to pay taxes. RMC has engaged mobile vans for this purpose. Those who want to pay holding tax can call up on phone number 0651-2100164 and this van reaches at their door step!
Another RMC initiative is ''Halla Bol Gaadi'' which fines people who are seen littering the roads. The van collects around Rs 8,000 each day. The present Deputy CEO of RMC is Shri Gopalji Tiwari.
Ranchi Municipal Corporation is governed by Ranchi Municipal Act, 2001. Sections 63 and 63A of the Ranchi Municipal Act, 2001 describe main functions of RMC as:
